Close games have largely been unkind to the Sioux City Explorers this season. On Tuesday night, the Explorers lost yet another close game, as Sioux City was defeated at home at Lewis and Clark Park by Sioux Falls, 5-4.

A second Sioux City Explorers' pitcher was recognized in the American Association in as many weeks for their on-field performance. Solomon Bates, a 26-year-old right-hander, was named the league's Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 21.

Sioux City took three games over the Kansas City Monarchs over the weekend to start the season. Verburg was one of several pitchers that were sharp for the Explorers as Sioux City out-scored the Monarchs 19-2 over the three-game set.
